Narbi Price
Part of the New Light Prize Exhibition 2020
Narbi Price is a painter, curator and lecturer who lives and works in Gateshead and Newcastle upon Tyne. He was the Journal Culture Awards Visual Artist of the Year in 2018, and the winner of the Contemporary British Painting Prize 2017. He was featured in Phaidon's Vitamin P3 - New Perspectives in Painting and was a prize-winner in the John Moores Painting Prize 2012.
Narbi’s work involves journeys to specific places that have witnessed a range of events – variously historical, famous, personal or forgotten. He researches the precise location of a chosen event, ranging from significant moments in music, film/TV, whimsical acts through to places of violence and death, among others. Working from photographs taken at the site, he makes paintings in the studio focusing on the abstract, formal and painterly qualities of the resultant images.
