Katie Braida
Katie Braida is a ceramacist who makes sculptural vessels and forms using a variety of hand building techniques. Katie works with soft clay coils and slabs; this process allows the material to move and suggest direction. Creating their own forms during the process.
Once these forms are outlined, the surfaces can be layered with pattern and texture inspired. Each piece discovers it's own rhythms and patterns which mimic the natural and man-made environment.
Colour is applied using brushes, building up layers of slip, oxide and underglaze colours to create a depth of colour which has variations of tone and colour within it. Katie predominantly uses terra sigillata slips to create thin layers of colour and a soft, satin surface; reminiscent of the quality of the clay surface before the bisque firing. This surface invites interaction; and through interaction with the forms, you get to know the subtleties of each individual piece.
