We're delighted to welcome Deborah back to The Biscuit Factory to headline our Winter season. In a solo-exhibition coming this 23 November, expect atmospheric landscapes in oil and charcoal, inspired by the philosophy and aesthetics of the nineteenth century romantics juxtaposed with gentle provoking of incongruous graphic forms.
Deborah Grice Winter Headline Exhibition
Deborah Grice’s latest collection will be showcased as our Winter Headline Exhibition and draws inspiration from the philosophy and aesthetics of 19th-century Romantic landscape painters.
By adopting their visual language, Deborah evokes a sense of familiarity in the viewer. At first glance, her work appears gentle, timeless, and unchallenging, set in an ambiguous space. However, this initial calm is disrupted by her striking incorporation of sharp, futuristic forms, creating a powerful contrast. These elements challenge the viewer, prompting reflection and leaving a lasting impression long after leaving the gallery.
All Will Be Well | Oil on Canvas | Framed H:32 x W:38 cm | £625
Grice’s work explores an unsettling duality: should we delight in the beauty of the world or be concerned about its precarious future? While she doesn’t claim to predict what lies ahead, her paintings invite contemplation on humanity’s intricate relationship with nature and with each other, offering a glimmer of hope in the process.
Known for more than just traditional landscapes, Grice draws from her personal experiences—such as piloting light aircraft, traveling to the Outer Hebrides, and her passion for anthropology—for inspiration. Her signature use of expansive horizons, paired with a unique artistic vision, aims to offer comfort and hope in these times of uncertainty. Her ability to craft epic, almost transcendent imagery feels especially relevant as we navigate an era of global upheaval.
Deborah Grice's exhibition, All Shall Be Well, at The Biscuit Factory, offers viewers a sense of empathy and visual solace, with the quiet reassurance that, indeed, all shall be well.
